wildlife refuge & hospital

One of the most important things I do is as a volunteer. My husband and I started volunteering last year at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in the hospital caring for sick and injured wildlife. Woodford Cedar Run is divided into two sections. Nature Center/Refuge and Hospital/Rehabilitation. This year we’ve expanded and along with the hospital have started doing some things around the Nature Center where I greet visitors at the Nature Center and my husband is caring for our residents in the reptile room. I also actively fund-raise on my Facebook profile for my birthday every year! But there are a variety of opportunities for volunteers.

  • Helping care for wildlife
  • Helping with educational programs
  • Greeting visitors at our Nature Center
  • Staffing at festival special events
  • Fundraising
  • Building and repairing wildlife enclosures
  • General office work
  • Event planning

“Betty and Jim Woodford devoted their lives to Pinelands preservation, environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation. Betty became an expert botanist, naturalist, nature photographer and wildlife rehabilitator. She was renowned for her Pinelands education programs. In 1997 the Woodford’s ultimate dream was realized when a Green Acres grant preserved Cedar Run’s land and buildings for future generations.”

“Cedar Run is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of New Jersey’s wildlife and habitats through education, conservation and rehabilitation.”

“How we achieve this…dsc_0428-199x300

Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge sits on 171 wooded acres on the edge of the New Jersey Pinelands. Cedar Run includes the Woodford Nature Center, an outdoor Wildlife Housing Area with nearly 60 native residents, and a Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital. The overall mission of  Cedar Run is to serve as a community resource on the importance of protecting and enhancing healthy ecosystems for all.

To that end, Cedar Run engages in: ecologically based land management; the operation of a Federally and NJ State licensed hospital facility that cares for more than 5,000 injured, orphaned or displaced native wildlife each year; the education of over 20,000 students annually through our various on-site and outreach programs; and serves as an active resource to the greater New Jersey community on all wildlife and habitat related questions and issues.”

Meditation Tips:
  1. Find a quiet setting where you will not be disturbed. This is particularly vital if you are new to meditation, with practice, a person becomes more skilled and will be able to meditate in noisy, crowded places or stressful situations. You can even sit in the shower or bathtub (don’t fall asleep).
  2. Sit for 2-3 minutes at first. It sounds like it will be crazy easy right? But some have trouble finding stillness for even 2 or 3 minutes. I believe insight timer (phone app) has some super short guided meditations. Try it this for a week, daily. As you improve, add more time. Often getting up and doing it first thing in the morning helps get you in the right mindset for the whole day.
  3. Make sure you are in a comfortable position. Sitting, laying, standing, even walking. make sure your back is supported if you are sitting. The Lotus posture , the person is cross-legged but with their feet firmly on their thighs.
  4. Keep a passive but receptive focus. You are not trying to fall asleep, you may but that’s not the goal.
  5. You can keep your eyes open if you find it more comfortable, but if you do, find a non moving focal point to keep your gaze steadily on; a candle, a mandala, a piece of artwork.  Or close your eyes and simply use a mantra. The word “mantra” is derived from the Sanskrit word “man” which means to think and “tra” which means to liberate – together these mean to liberate from thought. Common mantras include those with peace-bringing associations such as “peace” or “Om.
  6. You can meditate simply with a mantra. Or you can read through a meditation and then from memory trace back through as you meditate. This often combines guided with allowing your mind to fill in spaces with things important to you. Or you can find many guided meditations online or even live classes.
  7. As you first settle into your meditation session, simply check to see how you’re feeling. How does your body feel? What is the quality of your mind? Busy? Tired? Anxious? See whatever you’re bringing to this meditation session as completely OK.
  8. Count your breaths…Now that you’re settled in, turn your attention to your breath. Just place the attention on your breath as it comes in, and follow it through your nose all the way down to your lungs. Try counting “one” as you take in the first breath, then “two” as you breathe out. Repeat this to the count of 10, then start again at one.
  9. Your mind will wander. Just come back and recenter. This is an almost absolute certainty. There’s no problem with that. When you notice your mind wandering, smile, and simply gently return to your breath. Count “one” again, and start over. You might feel a little frustration, but it’s perfectly OK to not stay focused, we all do it. This is the practice, and you won’t be good at it for a little while.
  10. The loving kindness meditation is the most common meditation done by many many people daily.
  11. Don’t worry too much that you’re doing it wrong. You will worry you’re doing it wrong. That’s OK, we all do. You’re not doing it wrong. There’s no perfect way to do it, just be happy you’re doing it.
  12. Don’t worry about clearing the mind. Lots of people think meditation is about clearing your mind, or stopping all thoughts. It’s not. This can sometimes happen, but it’s not the “goal” of meditation. If you have thoughts, that’s normal. We all do. Our brains are thought factories, and we can’t just shut them down. Instead, just try to practice focusing your attention, and practice some more when your mind wanders.
  13. Stay with whatever arises. When thoughts or feelings arise, and they will, you might try staying with them awhile. Yes, I know I said to return to the breath, but after you practice that for a week, you might also try staying with a thought or feeling that arises. We tend to want to avoid feelings like frustration, anger, anxiety … but an amazingly useful meditation practice is to stay with the feeling for awhile. Just stay, and be curious.
  14. Another thing you can do, once you become a little better at following your breath, is focus your attention on one body part at a time. Start at the soles of your feet — how do those feel? Slowly move to your toes, the tops of your feet, your ankles, all the way to the top of your head.
  15. Another place to put your attention, again, after you’ve practice with your breath for at least a week, is the light all around you. Just keep your eyes on one spot, and notice the light in the room you’re in. Another day, just focus on noticing sounds. Another day, try to notice the energy in the room all around you (including light and sounds).
  16. When you’re finished with your two minutes, smile. Be grateful that you had this time to yourself, that you stuck with your commitment, that you showed yourself that you’re trustworthy, where you took the time to get to know yourself and make friends with yourself. That’s an amazing two minutes of your life.

what is moon magic

Moon Magic

Earth, Sun, Moon

The moon phases involve three bodies in our solar system: Earth, Sun, and Moon. We here on Earth spin on our axis, making a complete 360-degree rotation every 24 hours (which is what gives us night and day), we also orbit the Sun in a yearly transit. Next, there’s the Moon. The Moon takes its own orbital path around us, Earth. Making a full cycle about every 29.5 days. And of course, the Sun is the center of our solar system. It’s also moving, just slowly and our entire solar system orbits around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Our Luna, LaLuna – The Moon

The Moon literally moves with us, within us and a sacred dance, like moving of tides unfolds in even, rhythmic cycles mirroring the cycles of your body, the cycles of the harvest and growth of plants and trees, the cycles of life. This dance is what we celebrate when we follow moon phases and honor the Moon’s cycles. The Moon is the closest astronomical body to Earth, giving it strong influence over all life on our planet. The Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth’s oceans, causing tides. Tidal friction caused by the Moon slows down Earth’s rotation over time, creating our 24-hour days. Without the Moon, our days would be 6 – 8 hours long, with more than 1,000 days in a year. The Moon is the only reason we have solar and lunar eclipses. The external force of the Moon stabilizes Earth’s 23.5-degree axial tilt, preventing catastrophic shifts – imagine no seasons at all or rolling on our side like Uranus, with the most extreme seasons imaginable. Existence on Earth without our Moon would mean very dark nights forever.

Lunar Phases

Although new moons and full moons get the most attention, there are actually 8 moon phases. And these phases reflect the relationship between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon isn’t changing on her own, she’s reflecting the Sun’s light. The positions of the Moon and Sun in the sky from Earth’s perspective determine how much of the Moon is illuminated or visible. The entire lunar phase cycle is about 29.5 days. It begins when the Sun and Moon come together (new moon), peaks when they oppose each other (full moon) and ends just before they come back together again (waning crescent or dying moon).

New Moon

The new moon is the beginning of the entire lunar cycle. The Moon is dark, being infused with the light of the Sun, but not visible. The yang (masculine) energy of the sun merges with the yin (feminine) essence of the moon during this time. This is the best and strongest time to set intentions for; new ideas, projects, jobs, all things of new beginnings. The dark moon is full of possibility. During a new moon, it serves us to breathe new life into any area of stagnation or any place in your life where you would like to impact positive change. This is the time to set intentions based on your deepest desires, release fear, lean into faith, and trust your inner vision. Work with labradorite, black moonstone, iolite, obsidian, aquamarine and clear quartz.

Waxing Crescent

In her waxing crescent phase, the Moon begins to grow s. What intentions you initiated in the new phase is starting to take shape. This phase reflects a commitment to intentions. Time, effort, and determination are required to establish roots and build a strong foundation for your intentions to begin to take hold. This isn’t the time to sit back and just wait for things to materialize, you have to put effort and heart into it. The process is still in the early stages and it’s challenging to let go of old beliefs and patterns that block new growth. Especially the ones deep seeded into your subconscious from childhood trauma or hardship and ancestral karma that was never resolved. It’s time to keep going forward, putting one foot in front of the other. Work with nuumite, rainbow moonstone, rose quartz and emerald.

First Quarter

When the Moon is in her first quarter phase she is brightening, but we only see a small part of her. This halfway mark in the sky reflects the process of actualizing intentions, letting and watching as plans unfold. This part of the cycle demands your effort and a whole lot of heart behind that push. This is the time to courageously work hard for what you want, so that you may attract all that you’ve asked for and more. Work with jet, onyx, carnelian and lapis lazuli.

Waxing Gibbous

The Moon is now almost full and the growing intensity and illumination is powerful. This is the time to make any adjustments, or fine tuning your intention you set at the New Moon. Waxing gibbous phase can be stressful. What if it’s not perfect? What if my intention doesn’t transpire? Now’s the time to stay focused, this building of energy can be tireless and it’s important not to get fixated on things that don’t really matter.  Work with fluorite, carnelian, tigers eye and citrine.

Full Moon

“Full phase” is a metaphor for fulfillment, completion and manifestation! When the Moon is new, we set intentions. When she is full, we give birth to our intentions, dreams and hopes. Whatever you’ve been working towards is ready to be revealed in awareness and foresight. This is the culmination of results from the entire waxing cycle. This is the time for gratitude and release. Whatever you are ready to let go of, tonight is the night. Fear, relationships, bad habits, etc… it’s time to toss them into the virtual fire to be released, cleansed and put in a place of peace. Work with moonstone, selenite, and quartz.

Waning Gibbous

his phase is sometimes called “disseminating” which urges you to share the results of your efforts with the world. How are your manifestations helping others and serving mankind? It’s time to take responsibility for yourself and your accomplishments and put them to good use while removing ego from the equation. Express gratitude to your elders, ancestors and higher power ask for their guidance as you ready for the descent of the entire moon cycle. If your higher power is purely energy or trees, ocean or mountains; proclaim your gratitude and spend time honoring and understanding the working of your world. Work with calcite, angelite, citrine and unakite jasper.

Last Quarter

Last quarter symbolizes the expanding consciousness about who we and how we walk through our world. Last quarter moon reflects those moments when you finally (should) be seeing the bigger picture. There is potential for vision and prophecy but you need to be willing to let go of old attachments to make room for the future. And release that ego! Work with rose quartz, bronzite, and sodalite.

Waning Crescent

There’s powerful magic in endings, which includes the birth of beginnings. When the moon reaches waning crescent, she’s at the end of her entire cycle. It’s time to release what isn’t needed and let go with grace. In this phase, the veil grows thin, making it easier to receive messages and signs. There is an emptiness in the darkness and much to be learned there. Lean into faith and honor the darkness within and without, you discover the greater truths of existence. This phase compels you to sacrifice for future generations, including your own rebirth. Lead with the best of yourself through service, love, and compassion. Work with bloodstone, black tourmaline, petalite, and obsidian.

The Eclipse

Most of the time, the Earth, Moon, and Sun do not perfectly align because the Moon’s orbit around Earth is about 5 degrees off from Earth’s orbit around the Sun. If they were aligned, Earth would block the Sun’s light at the full moon and the Moon would block the Sun’s light at the new moon. When they do precisely line up, we experience a phenomena known as the solar and lunar eclipses. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s shadow crosses Earth’s surface. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters Earth’s shadow. This is why a solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon, and a lunar eclipse only at a full moon. Eclipses affect our body and our personal energy field just as they change the Earth’s electromagnetic energy field. The currents that run through our nervous systems are sensitive, and pick up these influences. Eclipses deal with shadow energy and truth. Secrets that others are keeping from you may be revealed. Secrets that you’re keeping from others may also be revealed. It’s a good time to be honest with yourself (and others) before the Universe forces you to. Both eclipse events are shadow work time, which means they reveal what’s hidden or just beyond our grasp. Solar eclipses, associated with the daylight, have more of an external effect. They reveal what’s hidden from you in your conscious, waking life. Lunar eclipses bring up emotional and internal issues. They reveal what’s hidden from you in your subconscious world. Work with Moldavite, Tektite, and Labradorite. I also find heavy metals, such as gold, copper, and pyrite to be grounding and protective during this time, and they keep prosperity and abundance flowing into our lives when we may feel a little unsupported.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust
of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, and
whose body encircles the universe:

“I who am the beauty of the green earth,
and the white moon among the stars,
and the mysteries of the waters,
I call upon your soul to arise and come unto Me.
For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.
From me all things proceed and unto me they must return.

Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices,
for behold! all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.
Let there be beauty and strength,
power and compassion,
honor and humility,
mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me,
know that your seeking and yearning will avail you not,
unless you know the Mystery.
For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself
you will never find it without.

For behold! I have been with you from the beginning,
and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.”

book a reading

Tarot for me isn’t really about predicting the future. But it is about helping you to see a path more clearly by diving in deeper to a situation to help you see some light in how to navigate what’s happening, or what’s coming. The tarot to me is your story unfolding in a small moment in time, paused so you can catch a breath while you gain insight. We live in a wondrous, mysterious universe. One where synchronicity abounds, the Tarot is a wonderful tool to focus on this the threads of life, to understand the signs and messages that we need to hear right now. I blend my knowledge of the Tarot, my second sight into the artistry of the cards with the messages I receive from the universe, your higher power and my guides to help you to begin to see through the fog of confusion, or the paralysis of fear, and gain clarity on the issues that deeply matter to you.

THE KINDS OF QUESTIONS A TAROT READING CAN ANSWER:
HOW TO FIND YOUR WAY – CLARIFY YOUR PATH – FIND OUT WHAT IS BLOCKING YOUR WAY FORWARD AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO OVERCOME IT – HOW TO OVERCOME MONEY BLOCKS – CAREER/SCHOOL GUIDANCE – FINDING INNER PEACE – DECISION MAKING – AND MORE..

~ THE MOON RETURNS: A LUNAR CYCLE TAROT SPREAD ~
The Moon Returns is a simple three card spread that is meant to be cast monthly, helping us to both find deep meaning and honor the swift passage of the monthly Lunar Return or Moon cycle. There are plenty of ways to read the cards and practice divination in general, but eventually we are faced with developing the skill of interpreting time, its passage, and influence on us through our chosen divinatory medium. When working with Lunar Returns and the cycle of the Moon we learn to practice the infinite of our consciousness – its revelation, growth, decay, and renewal – within the embrace of the finite. In interpreting time and the weight of interpretation of each card within a Moon-centered spread we can explore how to hold meaning with an open hand passing through eddies of time rather than trying to hold the waters of wisdom in a closed fist. I guess what I’m trying to say is allow space for whatever comes through in the following spread to be both profound and passing.

We are firmly in the season of ascent and the quiet of winter gives way to the cacophony of a buzzing earth. Balancing : An Autumn Equinox Spread
$20.00 – Offered during the month before Autumn Equinox.
The Autumnal Equinox (or Mabon as it has become popularly known because of the works of Aidan Kelly) is the second harvest of the wheel of the year in many a modern Pagan tradition. Astronomically speaking, it is when the center of the Sun is matched to the Earth’s axis which means that day and night are of equal length for that time period. We are firmly in the season of descent and the darkening year and the Autumnal Equinox is a time to gather together for a harvest feast, to take stock of what we have worked for all year and what will support us through the winter. Our Autumnal Equinox Spread examines the need for balance and the preparation for descent as well as honoring the harvest by both giving and receiving.

Hallowing: A Samhain Spread
$30.00 – The third and final harvest festival of the year, Samhain is the end of the bright half of the year – the roots to Beltane’s flowering branches. The part of our selves that has been slumbering since Beltane, awaken to the call of night, as we join the Spirits, Ancient Ones, Ancestors, Wild God/desses, and their horde as they clamber noisily throughout the land, welcoming in the new year. Our Samhain Tarot Spread glimpses forwards and backwards through the malleability of time and the veil which shapes and bends with greater ease during the Hallow’s season. The spread is an attempt to connect us with our oracular inclinations, to notice the omens, and to become a better omen ourselves.

I do offer clarification draws for each card in your reading and most readings take a little over an hour but can run longer. I do my readings via zoom and will send you a copy of the recording. But if you prefer we can do the reading over the phone.
