what is moon magic

Moon Magic

Earth, Sun, Moon

The moon phases involve three bodies in our solar system: Earth, Sun, and Moon. We here on Earth spin on our axis, making a complete 360-degree rotation every 24 hours (which is what gives us night and day), we also orbit the Sun in a yearly transit. Next, there’s the Moon. The Moon takes its own orbital path around us, Earth. Making a full cycle about every 29.5 days. And of course, the Sun is the center of our solar system. It’s also moving, just slowly and our entire solar system orbits around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Our Luna, LaLuna – The Moon

The Moon literally moves with us, within us and a sacred dance, like moving of tides unfolds in even, rhythmic cycles mirroring the cycles of your body, the cycles of the harvest and growth of plants and trees, the cycles of life. This dance is what we celebrate when we follow moon phases and honor the Moon’s cycles. The Moon is the closest astronomical body to Earth, giving it strong influence over all life on our planet. The Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth’s oceans, causing tides. Tidal friction caused by the Moon slows down Earth’s rotation over time, creating our 24-hour days. Without the Moon, our days would be 6 – 8 hours long, with more than 1,000 days in a year. The Moon is the only reason we have solar and lunar eclipses. The external force of the Moon stabilizes Earth’s 23.5-degree axial tilt, preventing catastrophic shifts – imagine no seasons at all or rolling on our side like Uranus, with the most extreme seasons imaginable. Existence on Earth without our Moon would mean very dark nights forever.

Lunar Phases

Although new moons and full moons get the most attention, there are actually 8 moon phases. And these phases reflect the relationship between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon isn’t changing on her own, she’s reflecting the Sun’s light. The positions of the Moon and Sun in the sky from Earth’s perspective determine how much of the Moon is illuminated or visible. The entire lunar phase cycle is about 29.5 days. It begins when the Sun and Moon come together (new moon), peaks when they oppose each other (full moon) and ends just before they come back together again (waning crescent or dying moon).

New Moon

The new moon is the beginning of the entire lunar cycle. The Moon is dark, being infused with the light of the Sun, but not visible. The yang (masculine) energy of the sun merges with the yin (feminine) essence of the moon during this time. This is the best and strongest time to set intentions for; new ideas, projects, jobs, all things of new beginnings. The dark moon is full of possibility. During a new moon, it serves us to breathe new life into any area of stagnation or any place in your life where you would like to impact positive change. This is the time to set intentions based on your deepest desires, release fear, lean into faith, and trust your inner vision. Work with labradorite, black moonstone, iolite, obsidian, aquamarine and clear quartz.

Waxing Crescent

In her waxing crescent phase, the Moon begins to grow s. What intentions you initiated in the new phase is starting to take shape. This phase reflects a commitment to intentions. Time, effort, and determination are required to establish roots and build a strong foundation for your intentions to begin to take hold. This isn’t the time to sit back and just wait for things to materialize, you have to put effort and heart into it. The process is still in the early stages and it’s challenging to let go of old beliefs and patterns that block new growth. Especially the ones deep seeded into your subconscious from childhood trauma or hardship and ancestral karma that was never resolved. It’s time to keep going forward, putting one foot in front of the other. Work with nuumite, rainbow moonstone, rose quartz and emerald.

First Quarter

When the Moon is in her first quarter phase she is brightening, but we only see a small part of her. This halfway mark in the sky reflects the process of actualizing intentions, letting and watching as plans unfold. This part of the cycle demands your effort and a whole lot of heart behind that push. This is the time to courageously work hard for what you want, so that you may attract all that you’ve asked for and more. Work with jet, onyx, carnelian and lapis lazuli.

Waxing Gibbous

The Moon is now almost full and the growing intensity and illumination is powerful. This is the time to make any adjustments, or fine tuning your intention you set at the New Moon. Waxing gibbous phase can be stressful. What if it’s not perfect? What if my intention doesn’t transpire? Now’s the time to stay focused, this building of energy can be tireless and it’s important not to get fixated on things that don’t really matter.  Work with fluorite, carnelian, tigers eye and citrine.

Full Moon

“Full phase” is a metaphor for fulfillment, completion and manifestation! When the Moon is new, we set intentions. When she is full, we give birth to our intentions, dreams and hopes. Whatever you’ve been working towards is ready to be revealed in awareness and foresight. This is the culmination of results from the entire waxing cycle. This is the time for gratitude and release. Whatever you are ready to let go of, tonight is the night. Fear, relationships, bad habits, etc… it’s time to toss them into the virtual fire to be released, cleansed and put in a place of peace. Work with moonstone, selenite, and quartz.

Waning Gibbous

his phase is sometimes called “disseminating” which urges you to share the results of your efforts with the world. How are your manifestations helping others and serving mankind? It’s time to take responsibility for yourself and your accomplishments and put them to good use while removing ego from the equation. Express gratitude to your elders, ancestors and higher power ask for their guidance as you ready for the descent of the entire moon cycle. If your higher power is purely energy or trees, ocean or mountains; proclaim your gratitude and spend time honoring and understanding the working of your world. Work with calcite, angelite, citrine and unakite jasper.

Last Quarter

Last quarter symbolizes the expanding consciousness about who we and how we walk through our world. Last quarter moon reflects those moments when you finally (should) be seeing the bigger picture. There is potential for vision and prophecy but you need to be willing to let go of old attachments to make room for the future. And release that ego! Work with rose quartz, bronzite, and sodalite.

Waning Crescent

There’s powerful magic in endings, which includes the birth of beginnings. When the moon reaches waning crescent, she’s at the end of her entire cycle. It’s time to release what isn’t needed and let go with grace. In this phase, the veil grows thin, making it easier to receive messages and signs. There is an emptiness in the darkness and much to be learned there. Lean into faith and honor the darkness within and without, you discover the greater truths of existence. This phase compels you to sacrifice for future generations, including your own rebirth. Lead with the best of yourself through service, love, and compassion. Work with bloodstone, black tourmaline, petalite, and obsidian.

The Eclipse

Most of the time, the Earth, Moon, and Sun do not perfectly align because the Moon’s orbit around Earth is about 5 degrees off from Earth’s orbit around the Sun. If they were aligned, Earth would block the Sun’s light at the full moon and the Moon would block the Sun’s light at the new moon. When they do precisely line up, we experience a phenomena known as the solar and lunar eclipses. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s shadow crosses Earth’s surface. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters Earth’s shadow. This is why a solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon, and a lunar eclipse only at a full moon. Eclipses affect our body and our personal energy field just as they change the Earth’s electromagnetic energy field. The currents that run through our nervous systems are sensitive, and pick up these influences. Eclipses deal with shadow energy and truth. Secrets that others are keeping from you may be revealed. Secrets that you’re keeping from others may also be revealed. It’s a good time to be honest with yourself (and others) before the Universe forces you to. Both eclipse events are shadow work time, which means they reveal what’s hidden or just beyond our grasp. Solar eclipses, associated with the daylight, have more of an external effect. They reveal what’s hidden from you in your conscious, waking life. Lunar eclipses bring up emotional and internal issues. They reveal what’s hidden from you in your subconscious world. Work with Moldavite, Tektite, and Labradorite. I also find heavy metals, such as gold, copper, and pyrite to be grounding and protective during this time, and they keep prosperity and abundance flowing into our lives when we may feel a little unsupported.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust
of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, and
whose body encircles the universe:

“I who am the beauty of the green earth,
and the white moon among the stars,
and the mysteries of the waters,
I call upon your soul to arise and come unto Me.
For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.
From me all things proceed and unto me they must return.

Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices,
for behold! all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.
Let there be beauty and strength,
power and compassion,
honor and humility,
mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me,
know that your seeking and yearning will avail you not,
unless you know the Mystery.
For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself
you will never find it without.

For behold! I have been with you from the beginning,
and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.”
