plum preserves recipe:ย 8 C pitted, quartered tart plums,ย 6 C Sugar,ย 1.5 C Water
1. Prepare canner jars and lids.
2. In a large, deep stainless steel saucepan, combine plums, sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Increase heat to high and boil hard, stirring frequently until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and test gel. (There are different ways to do this. I use a candy thermometer and bring it to 220.) If gel stage has been reached, skim off foam.
3. Ladle hot preserves into hot jars, leaving 1/4โ€ headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust headspace, if necessary, by adding more preserves. Wipe rim. Center lid and screw band fingertip-tight.
4. Place jars in canner following the boiling water method for your canner. Bring to a boil and process for 15 minutes. Remove canner lid. Wait 5 minutes, then remove jars, cool and store.

Meet Sammy

This young man has stolen our hearts images (2)ย We don’t know much about Sammy. His name was Tilton and he is a year and a half at best guess (may be a little younger). We adopted him from Animal Alliance New Jerseyย Animal Alliance rescue’s from high kill shelters. And Sammy was no exception to that. The kill shelter knew virtually nothing of him, or didn’t care to ask. We know he is amazingly healthy, has immaculate teeth and is super smart. Sammy has some skills…

  • knows how to plat fetch
  • knows how to give a paw
  • knows to sit and stay when told to

We are pretty sure Sammy is a Shiba-Chi (Shiba Inu/Chihuahua). Some day we may do the DNA test but breed has never mattered to us. But we do know that he carries himself very well and has traits, build and markings of both breeds. To me though he is simply Sammy, our furkid. I won’t say furbaby because although he loves to cuddle, he is fiercely independent. Once he gained the confidence in us, his true personality was able to be fully out there.

Sammy loves to parkour off furniture to windows. He loves balls. He’s taken over our bed and likes to start the night under the covers. And he loves to go for walks, fast walks lol. He is high energy, super intelligent, and a whole lot of fun.ย

But you know what? All this didn’t present itself at the rescue. While we were still there, at first he seemed very afraid and uninterested in us. But we saw something in his eyes that said this dog isn’t showing all he is to us, yet. And that’s something people who go see animals at rescues and shelters have to remember. They may seem shy, scared, distant. But when they finally get the love and attention they need, they blossom.

Sammy is NOTHING like any other animal I have ever called my furbaby. His personality is uniquely him and I love him all the more for it. He’s filled up and empty space in my soul and we know that we have lots of adventures to go on and lots of memories to make with this sweet boyย images (2)ย

As most of you know our last remaining furbaby passed away a few months ago. Keith and I as a married couple had five furbabies; Buster, Odin, Tinka Belle & Loki our cats, and Ippo our spoiled chihuahua. Even before I married Keith I always had cats. My entire adult life from week one of moving out of my parents house I had at least one cat. In all I’ve had 3 other cats, plus 1 rescued mamma cat and her litter that were adopted out, 1 bird, a couple hamsters, a lizard and a fish tank prior to married life. All either have crossed the rainbow bridge, were re-homed (three cats when I moved out of state), or adopted out (momma and her litter).

When our last furbaby had to be released from this world I couldn’t breathe. I had never been without a companion animal by my side. And not being able to have kids, our furkids were our kids. I even had a mild panic attack at the emergency vets office. And in that moment I said, “no more animals”. After losing so many, I was wore out from the illnesses, care and emotional heartbreak of caring for a senior animal. I was heartsick.

As time passed I found myself looking on Petfinder and the Facebook pages of local rescues. I knew so many needed homes that I couldn’t not consider adopting again, “someday”. A week or so later the hubby and I started talking about what we wanted to do. Do we want to commit to this again? If we do, do we want a cat, a dog, a hedgehog, what??? Dogs have such great heart healing power and my heart indeed was still hurting. The wise hubby insisted we needed to adopt a dog.

So we looked and looked and looked. And we found about 20 that we were interested in. I had criteria.

  1. I wanted a younger dog. I’m that person who is always adopting the un-adoptable, the seniors, etc.. This time I wanted a young one.
  2. They would need to get along with either another dog, another cat, or both. We knew eventually we would want to adopt at least one more shelter animal someday.
  3. I wanted one that had been at the shelter either a long time, or one who was not adjusting to shelter life.

So we had to narrow it down and had to start with one of them. To meet them and see if they liked us. We found an adorable Cairn Terrier at a shelter here in N.J. so we sent in an application and we were off to meet him. Sadly, once there, the rescue owner said they had been having behavior problems with him and would prefer not to adopt him out right then. She said one of the staff would likely adopt him to work with him.

So now what? She wanted to show us other dogs. Luckily there were 2 or 3 others there who we also had on our list and Sammy (Tilton at the time), was one of them.

And, we fell in love.
We fell in love with Sammy and 2 other dogs! What are we gonna do?? I knew I was and would be sad who we left behind but right now we can only do one. Well we spent a couple hours there and Sammy (Tilton) was the best fit for us and for him. And we knew pretty quickly that his name would be Sammy (after the Sam Winchester on the TV show, Supernatural).
